Nothing tech about this post: Tips, Tricks, Experiences

What we are about to share has nothing to do with technology, but some experiences, tips and tricks to deal with everyday caregiving for your loved ones.

TV Remote Control
There are so many buttons on the remote control, can someone with dementia remember which one to press? Well, my mum doesn’t, so to make things easier for her, we started cling/plastic wrapped the TV remote and use tape to mask out those buttons which she doesn’t need to use. If masking out the buttons don't work, perhaps cutting/taking/snipping out the buttons from the TV remote could be another alternative.

Heavily used TV Remote

Timer for Air-conditioning
Mum loves air-conditioning as she sweats easily. We noticed she switched it on for more than 12 hours sometimes, kept switching on and off several times per day and press the wrong buttons. At first, we masked out the buttons on the air-con remote just like the TV remote. But it turned out setting the timer is a better solution since it doesn't need to change volume or channel like the TV. We removed the batteries from the remote and Mum didn't notice. Somehow setting the aircon to a regular time interval regulates her sleeping hours too.

All-in-1 Body Wash and Shampoo
Who would think that one bottle of body wash and another bottle of shampoo can be so confusing to someone with dementia. We tried labelling the bottle for body wash and shampoo but Mum would just pumped the body wash for her hair too  Nothing wrong for her to use the body wash for hair since the ultimate goal is get herself clean. All-in-1 is an alternative.

Plan for incontinence
We have very much anticipated the fact that Mum will be incontinence one day, so we got water-proof mattress fitted bedsheets for her just in case of accidents. You can easily buy the product from online and cost around SGD$12-15 for single size bed.

Looks like normal fitted bedsheets but it is water-proof
