Gas cooking hob: Another possible fire hazard?
One problem solved another problem arises. Did we over worry about Mum using the stove since she doesn’t cook at all? We can’t tell and we need to eliminate the possibility for safety reasons. Next project: Change the gas hob to induction hob.
User Requirements
There are many induction hobs in the market so we are spoiled with choices. One challenge that we had was to find the right size hob which can fit the existing opening at the cooking area.
Another challenge is Dad wants to reuse his old pots and pans, some of which are stainless steel. Not all stainless steel cook-wares work on induction hob, the base of the pots and pans need to be of magnetic-based material. Induction hob uses magnetic field to heat up pots and pans.
Ceramic hob is also another choice. Basically, it conducts heat slower than induction, but most stainless steel cook-wares can work. There are also hobs which are “hybrid”, one side induction, the other side Ceramic, available in the market. We thought hybrid hob is the most suitable for our needs.
Tecno, a familiar Singapore brand
This is a familiar brand for some locals. Most hybrid hobs would cost around S$1100-1200. The model we were looking at is Tecno TG-283HB which is a hybrid induction and ceramic hob. The glass top is Schott Ceran and priced less than S$1000. The opening for our existing hob is 84cmX49cm which is slightly big for the new hob. However, the vendor is able to provide an aluminum frame so that the hob can fit. The vendor charges S$50 for the aluminum frame.
Installation was quite hassle free. Basically, it was take out the old hob, stick the frame in, place the new hob on and that’s it.
Learning how to operate the new hob
Writing down the instruction works every time for us every time we teach Dad new things. Dad doesn’t understand English so we got to label the buttons on the hob in Chinese.
This time, we use labeling on the hob.
We were quite surprised he remembered how to operate the hob after 2 days of use.
Half way through our research, we realized not only we are “dementia-proofing” the house but also “elder-proofing” it. My dad loves to cook and somehow he feels that he needs to cook for my mum and himself. Cleaning would be much easier for too as the hob is made of glass-top. So far, Dad liked how fast the induction hob heats up the food and at the same time he also can slow cook some dishes using the ceramic hob.
